LNR Art Vitrine in Seeboden

While strolling through his hometown of Seeboden on Millstätter See, Daniel Lichterwaldt chanced upon a display cabinet that sparked the idea to transform it into a year-round exhibition space. In our interview, he delves into the genesis of this initiative, offering insights into his life and connection to Carinthia.

Your previous projects have consistently revolved around public spaces. What draws you to this particular realm?
In the traditional confines of art spaces, one finds oneself in a „sheltered“ yet somewhat isolated environment. Public spaces, on the other hand, are freely exposed –  this can create unexpected synergies. Art in these spaces can beautify the space and make it more vibrant, open up new perspectives and discourse, bring joy, and stimulate contemplation. I like to face new challenges and undergo intuitive developments – this is possible with art in public spaces, and artists worldwide use this potential. It would be great if the showcase could also encourage others to be proactive and initiate fresh projects.

So, how did the project unfold?
My first encounter with the showcase happened during a walk in Seeboden on Millstätter See. Intrigued, we tracked down the owner and pitched the idea to her. As is often the case with public art endeavors, there’s an initial optimism that everything will proceed smoothly, and you can dive into preparations right away. Unfortunately, this is not the case; new factors always lead to unexpected waiting times. Each project demands its own time to be developed, a lesson I was reminded of in this instance. Nevertheless, I am very happy that we can work on the showcase with art for the next three years.

Any other public space projects that have captured your attention?
I’m not going to single out specific projects, as it wouldn’t be fair to list just a single one given the broad spectrum of creative contributions in public spaces. Yet the constant metamorphosis of this space demonstrates the substantial impact artists have on its enrichment. Art in public spaces can contribute to people interacting with each other, while for many it marks also their first contact with art. I am fascinated by the unique dynamics of the places where such works of art are created. That’s why I commit to supporting and promoting such projects with Les Nouveaux Riches.

How important is it for Les Nouveaux Riches to work in this direction?
The project is an extension of LNR’s cosmos and allows us to offer exhibition opportunities to independent artists that we find exciting. In my opinion, it is also very important to realize projects outside of Vienna – numerous places have great potential. In Seeboden, we will be presenting digitally printed reproductions of artworks by national and international artists.

Why is it crucial for Les Nouveaux Riches to venture in this direction?
This project serves as a natural extension of LNR’s cosmos and allows us to offer exhibition opportunities to independent artists whose work resonates with us. Also diversifying our projects beyond Vienna is a priority – numerous places have great potential. In Seeboden, our showcase will feature digitally printed reproductions of artworks by both national and international artists.

Can you tell us more about this showcase? Where is it placed for example?
After an exhausting day of polishing, painting, and interior detailing, the showcase now gleams in its new splendor. The foiling has been applied and the postcard holder has also been installed – everything is set for its grand launch. The showcase is located at Hauptstraße 84, right in the center of town, opposite the main square – right between the church and the lakeshore.

Something about you. You grew up in the Seeboden area – how would you describe the region? What makes Seeboden special?
The surroundings are idyllic and I enjoy spending time there and escaping the city hustle and bustle. Everything seems much less complicated there – although this may just be an impression I have. The region also offers a plethora of activities to do around the lake. When I’m there, I’m constantly discovering new things and I’m thrilled to see how increasingly more initiatives in the field of art and culture are emerging in the region.

Is there anything else you would like to share with readers?
It’s not always easy for associations to implement projects, and it’s by no means guaranteed that private individuals will make their resources available. I am therefore grateful that we have been allowed to utilize the showcase and that the project is also receiving support from the region of Carinthia. Places are constantly evolving, which offers everyone the chance to participate in shaping them – I am eagerly anticipating this perspective.
